BACKGROUND:
The existing Public Works Maintenance Building was previously home to the Fire Department, prior to completion of the new fire station on Dove Road. The maintenance building is in need of immediate maintenance and repairs, as it takes on rainwater during rain events. Weatherproofing, a new roof, and minor grading around the structure can prevent rainwater from entering the structure in future storms.
DISCUSSION:
The previous Fire Station on Dove Road, located at 2901 West Dove Road, has recently been repurposed as the Public Works Maintenance Building. Public Works is housed in the building which contains offices for staff, and a garage and storage bays for parking Public Works vehicles and storing tools, water meters, meter boxes, road signs and poles, and an array of other Public Works and Parks inventory and materials necessary to maintain and repair the town's infrastructure.
During recent heavy storm events in May 2024, runoff entered the building and caused damage to the floors and walls. Staff contacted Weatherproofing Services, who has a contract for similar work with the City of Denton to assess the building and provide recommendations for protecting the structure.
A landscape buffer installed with the Villagio development has reduced drainage coming directly toward the structure. Staff has reached out to a drainage engineer to survey the property and provide recommendations to prevent future inundation of the structure.
